Solar Tours Dryden 2013March 16, 10am-noon, 812 Irish Settlement Rd, Freeville, Firefly Farm, home of Stuart and Zoe This circa 1850 farmhouse recently underwent an extensive energy upgrade involving moisture sealing the damp stone basement and air sealing the attic, resulting in a 4X reduction in winter-time electricity usage. The house is now almost entirely heated by wood and, with the use of commercial renewable power, is operating in a carbon neutral manner.
April 17, 6:30 - 8:30, 23 Lewis St, Dryden, home of Dan and Cathy Wakeman ---- A mid-1800s home in Dryden village, retrofitted with a 5520 watt solar PV (electric) system which is installed on the barn roof. A SunPower brand Fronius SPR-6501 inverter rated at 6500 watts is mounted next to the house circuit panel. This is a net metering system, there are no batteries. They keep the fun-to-watch, remote console, display unit in the dining room. Want to hear about all the numbers for solar power production? Come talk to Dan. May 21, 7-9pm, 51 Freese Rd, Varna, home of Dave Weinstein. This older home has been tightened down to about 5 air exchanges per hour, and has both geothermal and solar systems. Grid tied, the 8300 kwatt solar system produces about 10,000 kw hours per year - enough to offset the geothermal and appliance use. June 22, 2-4pm, 26 Quarry Rd, Ithaca, home of Nancy Norton and Buzz Dolph. This older house was moved from East Hill Plaza area, gutted, insulated and upgraded. There are 2 solar arrays, totaling 28000 kw. Buzz and Nancy have 2 electric cars and enjoy their freedom from the gas pump. Also of interest are other structures on the property that have examples of heat exchangers, on-demand hot water heaters and composting toilets. July 20, 10am - noon, 71 Brooktondale Road, Ithaca, home of Gil and Ilma Levine. This house has been outfitted with a 2-panel Schuco residential solar thermal system to provide hot water for household use. The system is roof mounted (flat roof) and has a 72 gallon storage tank with electric back-up. The installation, includes indoor monitoring of the temperature at the collector, and two levels in the tank. Solar Tour Dryden is sponsored and arranged by the Dryden Resource Awareness Coalition (DRAC). Since 2009 DRAC has been working to preserve the Dryden's assets - our rural heritage, our clean air and water, our natural areas. DRAC is also working to protect Dryden residents' tax dollars by protecting our town's infrastructure against premature failure that may be brought by heavy industrial uses. You can get more information at our web site DRAConline.wordpress.com. We meet in the Dryden Town Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. |
